Past The Fall interview 01/07/23
MM: Can you tell us about your Band and whos your biggest influences
We’re a 3 piece metal band from Cambridge UK, Me (Will Wright) on vocals/bass, Thomas Cope on Guitar/vocals, and Sebastian Fernandez on Drums. The core of the band is Me and Thomas, we’ve been friends for years. We wanted to put together something with no compromises that draws from all our previous adventures touring in bands. The band seems to appeal to fans of Melodeath, Groovy/grungy/thrashy metal. I guess we grew up on all the greats from metal and grunge, things like AIC, Pantera, Mastodon, Oldschool Opeth, Sabbath are probably in the sound somewhere but everything we like subconciously goes into the melting pot in the end!
MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from
Real life, for sure. We find it hard to relate and express the intensity that we feel if it’s not about our own experiences or something that is true to us.
MM: What would you say is your Bands favourite song ?
I guess ‘Beholden’ our set closer- it’s a great balance of everything the band has to offer in one song.
MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2023
Next stop is Bloodstock Open Air which we’re excited about. We’re working on new material right now as well, so we just have a few one off shows to escape the studio.
MM: What can we expect from (Band Name) live
Facemelting mix, epic virtuoso solos, massive vocal range from screams to whispers, dollops of groove, and great songwriting.
MM: What do you like best and worst abt touring
Probably the best thing is seeing new places and people, in fact the people really make what we do worthwhile in the end. The worst? Maybe just the endless hours of motorway! So not too bad really!
MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies
Mastodon, Lamb of God, Pantera!
MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why
That’s a tough one! Theres been loads! Me personally my top 3 would be in no particular order- AIC black gives way to blue tour Brixton Academy, Megadeth with diamondhead supporting Nottingham Rock City, and Original Black Sabbath lineup at Download. Also special shoutout to Heaven and Hell at Sonisphere!
MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with
Probably producing our debut Album- ‘From Insanity’s Ruin’ it was a real labour of love and a watershed moment for us.
MM: Which are your Two favourite Albums of all time
Wow! That’s a hard question! That pops into my mind right now; Thin Lizzy- Live and dangerous, and Sabbath- Master of reality. But man, there’s so many great albums!
MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people watching you?
In Past The Fall, we had a lot of previous experience in other bands and playing live, so its quite a natural place, just naturally infused with excitement and adrenaline. Sometimes I used to liken it to what it must feel like getting naked in public haha, you just have to let it all hang out!
MM: Growing up which Bands posters did you have on your bedroom wall.
Good question! Mine was covered wall to wall, I had things like- Nirvana, sepultura/soulfly, metallica, alice in chains, Soundgarden, korn, henry rollins, rage against the machine, perfect circle…
MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person
Tony Iommi- He took heavy blues and showed the way with Sabbath stylistically and sonically for the bedrock of all heavy music to date.
MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?
Maintaining the intregity of the music and our message as we grow bigger and use more social channels, even if it sinks us we don’t want to change what we do to jump on a bandwagon.
MM:If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?
Hmm tricky one! Probably it would be something not metal but was just a damn good song. I hear metal bands cover metal songs exactly sometimes and kinda wonder what the point is as it doesn’t put a new spin on it.
MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to your Band
We are the missing link between the past of heartfelt greats of metal and the modern sound, and we make albums that aren’t just one song ten times.
MM: Four words to describe your band
Dark, Epic, Groovy, Sincere.
