Past Five Interview 02/04/20
MM – What is your name and what do you do in the band?
PF:Jonathan Wallin, Lead singer and lead guitar.
MM - When was the band formed and why the name Past Five
PF:That's a tricky question since Past Five is this weird mutation of a couple of earlier bands. But if I'd have to pinpoint it, it would probably to be in 2015 when I joined the band that we found our direction collectively.
The short answer regarding our bandname is that we weren't allowed to play until after 5pm at our first rehearsal space due to companies having their workplace in the same house.
MM - What bands did you grow up listening to and how did they help in creating the style of music you perform today?
PF:Me personally, a lot of 70's and 80's rock (thanks, Dad!), like Kiss, Judas Priest, Sabbath and so on. I later moved on to heavier stuff, such as Pantera and Megadeth, which influenced me enormously!
MM :Name an Album you've heard recently and liked.
PF:Sleeptalk by Dayseeker, just an incredible album!
MM: Which song would you play to a Past Five virgin
PF:Probably our song 'God Forbid', since it has a good middle ground between heavy and melodic, and I'm really proud of the solo.
MM: What song would you do a cover version of
PF:We do a cover of Heartshaped Box by Nirvana at our live shows that we get some really good reactions from, so probably that.
MM : What one unique quality do your Band have to offer that no other bands possess?
PF:Probably our sound and the unique chemistry of our diverse influences combined.
MM : Who writes the songs that you perform? Is it a solo or joint effort?
PF: I usually come up with the foundation of the songs, and then we build and shape it collectively to wherever the song leads us.
MM : How can people keep up to date with what the band are up to and do
PF:On Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter mainly, but we post more behind the scenes stuff on Instagram than the other platforms.
MM : Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person, for better or for worse?
PF:It depends how far back your willing to look historically. Without Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry there would be no Rock n Roll, and without Black Sabbath there would be no Heavy Metal.
MM: How has the music media responded to the band so far
PF:So far we've been well received, but there's a couple more songs to be released yet, so I haven't ruled out pitchforks coming our way soon *laughs*.
MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?
PF:Getting our music out to the world and connecting with people. We're also writing some really cool new material we're excited about!
MM : If one of your songs could appear on a soundtrack or any film or cult TV series, which one would you choose and why?
PF:Playing With Fire (When Your Friends Are Enemies), because it has the energy and tempo that would be great for car chase-scenes and explosions.
MM: Can you tell us why we should check out Past Five
PF:Because I don't think there's many other bands that sounds like us, and because we give it all at our live shows.
MM: Four words to describe Past Five
PF:Loud, Groove, Sincere, Diverse
Five Questions:
