MM: Tell us about your band .. your influences and what took you down this genre of
music: In 2015, I had some songs ready that I had developed extensively. My fondness for
progressive and experimental music was clearly audible in that music. I then created a
Bandcamp page where I wanted to post that music, but then you also need a good band
name. I had already noted down some ideas, but didnt feel a sufficient match with the
music. So I started Googling and typed in my first name just for fun. Glorious Wolf came
up, and that appealed to me immediately because it was very closely related to me.
Incidentally, I dont consider Glorious Wolfs music to be metal, but more prog rock with
experimental twists and turns and perhaps a touch of psychedelia. The song If I Only
probably has the heaviest undertone, but the music is definitely guitar-driven. I grew up
with (and was therefore also inspired by) seventies music such as Jimi Hendrix, Led
Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, UFO, Scorpions, but certainly also
Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Camel and later also Porcupine Tree, Spocks Beard, Dream
Theater, Opeth etc. By the way, Glorious Wolf is a studio project with various guest
musicians.

MM:Are there any themes or messages you aim to convey through your music? It is only
natural that you incorporate your interests and what occupies your mind into your music,
both instrumentally and lyrically. For instance, I am interested in the vast universe and
what remains to be discovered and learned there, but I am also enormously interested in
what is here on our own beautiful Earth and in humanity. I do believe in the goodness of
people and always see opportunities and hope, and yet there is chaos and uncertainty
worldwide. All these developments reappear here and there in my compositions. The
theme for our latest album Elements Of Hope which was recently released on June 7, is
therefore a child growing up in a world with the challenges that we face today.
 

MM: What can fans expect from you in the near future—new music, tours, collaborations?
The fans have just been presented with a brand-new album, Elements Of Hope, but there
will certainly be a follow-up. Touring isnt on the cards (yet) since GW is a studio project,
but I dont rule out a live band. Besides Glorious Wolf, I also play in a blues-rock band that
we perform with regularly, and I also play in a prog-rock band with which we are currently
recording new material and where we will be promoting the upcoming new album live.
Who knows, we might even perform a few GW songs live with them.
 

MM: Are there any dream venues or festivals you’d love to play? Here in the Netherlands,
there is a very large festival that has been going on since 1970, and it attracts around
200,000 visitors annually (3 days at 60-70,000 visitors). It would of course be amazing to
be able to play there, but should Glorious Wolf ever start performing live, a prog-rock-
oriented festival somewhere in Europe would be perfect for playing.
 

MM: What’s been your most memorable live performance so far, and why? At a large
university student party called Vindicat atque . With over 210 years of history, Vindicat
is the oldest student association in the Netherlands, but also one of the most famous, with
quite a few hazing incidents. I had to perform with a rock band at one of their famous
parties, and during a Nirvana song we played, the crowd got so enthusiastic that they
dragged me off the stage with my guitar around my neck. Not very pleasant at the time,
but memorable, and nothing was broken.
 

MM: How do you prepare for a show, both mentally and physically? It is hard work, but you
also get a lot back from the audience. For a few days before a gig, I make sure I don't do
any heavy work that could get me injured, and I play more guitar during those days to be
nice and supple on the day of the performance. On the day itself, we are often on the road

early, but if I can, I try to relax for a bit. Then its setting up on location, soundchecking, and
hopefully a little time for relaxation.
 

MM:What emotions do you hope to evoke in fans when they watch your band live? That
they are moved by what we present as a band, but it is also always very nice to hear
afterwards that they enjoyed your guitar playing or a particular solo.
 

MM: Do you have any favourite pre-show rituals? We stand in a circle with the band
members, hands on top of each other, and express that we will be focused, but also give
everything musically that we have within us.
 

MM: How do you handle criticism or comparisons to other bands in the scene?

If it is constructive criticism or a comparison, we can always benefit from it.
 

MM: What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a band, and how did you
overcome it?

It is always difficult to stand out in the music business and to carve out a spot
among the many good bands, but by continuing to believe in yourself and persevering, you
will keep moving forward.
 

MM: Where do you see the band in five years, and what’s the ultimate goal for your
music? I hope to have released one or two successors to our last album Elements Of
Hope in five years, and perhaps it is time after all to form a live band with Glorious Wolf.
That would be a really great challenge.

MM:Tell us why we should check out your band.

Because we make slightly idiosyncratic
but accessible guitar-oriented music with our own sound and style. The lyrics are often
poetic with a message, and if you are open to progressive experimental music, you will
find it here with male and female fronted vocals.
