Eternal Closure 20/11/20
MM: Can you tell us about your Band and whos your biggest influences
We are a Progressive Melodic Metalcore band and have been playing in the Montreal scene since 2012. Our latest new member Maggy has brought new possibilities to our music that I can't wait to explore on our next album. We blend the sound from metalcore legends like Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and modern metal like Periphery, Currents and Erra. Other influences include Protest The Hero, August Burns Red, Dream Theater, Architects and Haken. We also love cats, as you can see in our music videos and our merch. Miow!
MM: Where do you draw your inspirations and ideas from
Anything really. I (Olivier) get inspired by listening to new music, but I also tend to hear rhythmic patterns pretty much anywhere. Movies and video games also inspire me a great deal when writing lyrics.
MM: What would you say is your Bands favourite song ?
If by that you mean my favorite Eternal Closure song, I'd say that would be “Survive” from our first album, “Screaming In Silence”. It's really special to me with how dynamic and long it is. The lyrics still hit me when I take the time to really listen to them again. I would say our most “perfect” song is probably “Defying Gravity” from “Color of Our Fears”. I feel like everything in that song is exactly how it should be, I'm extremely proud of it.
MM: Plans tour and festival wise for 2020
We had fun plans for festivals and shows but the pandemic ruined pretty much everything. We'll be ready when everything comes back though that's for sure.
MM: What can we expect from Eternal Closure live
A bunch of friends having fun and giving people something to remember. We have fun and make sure to bring the crowd along with us. We get pretty goofy sometimes. We don't chain songs together for 30 minutes waiting to come off the stage that's for sure.
MM: What do you like best and worst abt touring
We haven't really toured yet. We have moved around a bit for shows though and it has always been fun. So far we always had fun when doing that. I guess the worst part would be the actual driving around, but even then we have fun with it.
MM: Which three Bands would be your ultimate touring buddies
I guess I'll keep things Canadian just for fun. My three choices would be Protest The Hero, Red Handed Denial and The Agonist. I think that would be a sweet line-up.
MM: What's the most memorable concert you've been to (other than your own) and why
Protest The Hero's 10-year Anniversary tour for “Fortress” was pretty amazing. I listened to that album countless times during high school and to see it played in its entirety was incredible.
MM: What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment so far with
Our two shows for our album releases were pretty amazing. Packed crowds and memorable performances, I'll never forget those. It's just a bit of a shame that we lost the recording of the first one. I want to relive it so much haha.
MM: Which are your Two favourite Albums of all time
They change pretty much all the time. But two that I always have in the top are “Scenes From a Memory” by Dream Theater and the aforementioned “Fortress” by Protest The Hero. I love progressive metal. And while we don't really sound like that, it's more because of technical ability than anything else haha.
MM: Can you remember the first time you ever played live and how it felt to have people watching you?
It was with my dad's band actually. He was the drummer for a band called Sound Piñata, and when I was 11 years old, I replaced him for one song in one of their shows. It wasn't the simplest track either. I was extremely nervous but it went well. Fell in love with the rush and I always feel that whenever I get on stage, it's great.
MM: Growing up which Bands posters did you have on your bedroom wall.
I never really had band posters in my bedroom sadly haha. The bands I listened to were Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Yellowcard, Hoobastank, Breaking Benjamin, Bullet for Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, etc.. The typical stuff you'd expect a pre-teen to listen to in the mid-2000s.
MM - Who do you think influenced the world of Metal / Rock more than any other person.
Metallica isn't my favorite band ever. But you'd never get the metal I love without them being there in the first place.
MM - What's the most important thing to the band right now?
Promoting our newest release, “Color of Our Fears: Rediscovered” and writing the best music we can for the next one.
MM:If you could do a cover of any song which one would it be and why?
I'm not the biggest fan of covering songs in general. I love listening to them, but it doesn't inspire me as much. I really wanted to do one for “One More Light” by Linkin Park after Chester Bennington's passing. It was my way of paying homage to one of my idols, and it's probably the only cover we'll ever record.
MM: Tell us why we should buy and listen to your Band
Cause we're good hehe. Seriously though we really try to make our music interesting and memorable. We strike the balance between giving people something new but also familiar. If you like any of the bands mentioned at the beginning of this interview, I don't see how you could dislike what we do. Check out our videos for “The Slave or the Owner” or “Defying Gravity”, they're a good example of what you can expect.
MM: Four words to describe Eternal Closure
Interesting, Intense, Memorable and Miaow.
MM-Final Words for your fans and our readers
Stay safe and listen to good music. Pet your cats while listening to “Color of Our Fears: Rediscovered” on any streaming service. Best way to get through the pandemic if you ask me. Thanks for having us!
