Balrogath interview 21/08/23
MM:When you first came in contact with loud music and what was your first concert?
Different exposure for each of us, but the first concert we attended together was Iron
Maiden in 2019
MM: How did you get the band name
Deep diving the Silmarilian, we found the term Balrogath endearing to us. It means all of
Balrog kind.
MM:Why did you want to play in this genre of music
Power metal rules, death metal rules, Iron maiden rules, and so does Opeth, so why not do
both?
MM: Who or what inspires you to write songs? What bands have inspired you the most?
Our feelings provoked from the instruments we play conjure the sound we love, and the
words are tied to the stories we cherish the most. Iron Maiden, Unleash the Archers, Devin
Townsend, Ensiferum, Children of Bodom, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Killswitch Engage.
MM:Can you tell us about your music that you have released so far?
Arcane Sacrifice was a collection of songs about fantasy lore and D&D monsters that we
liked, but also the testing grounds for the sound we wanted to harbour as we grow. We
Bring Calamity is a more focused expression of the sound we’re currently exploring.
MM: Which places to play were important to you and why?
Lethbridge and Medicine Hat are our homes away from home, Dickens in Calgary was our
first show and will always hold a big place in our hearts.
MM: What was the weirdest show you ever played and why? Feel free to name more than
one, and don't withhold the details .
The second show we ever played was at Verns in Calgary and it was a pre-show for a
Halloween movie marathon at a local theatre. We also once played a show with a rock
opera troop at Shakers in Edmonton that was pretty amazing. And then there was the time
we played with Grimelda, I’m George Thoroughgood.
MM: Are there any other types of music you would like to play with a band?
Probably punk rock (TJ and Chris are already in a hardcore band called The Okayest),
maybe stoner rock/metal. Chris and Jesse have been talking about a stoner rock/metal
project for a while. Chris and Jesse also want to play Jazz.
MM: What can one expect if they go to one of your concerts?
Costumes, Theatrics, BIG GUITARS, and a lot of fun!
MM: Which festivals would you like to play at?
Armstrong, Mad With Power, Wacken, Hyperspace (which we’re doing next year,) Hellfest
and if Heavy MTL comes back, we’d love to be there!
MM: What are your plans for the future?
World domination, goblins taking control, eating the rich, and one day meeting
Nekrogoblikon. Maybe one day we’ll be able to pay rent with music if we’re lucky.
MM: Thanks for the interview. Is there anything else to add?
Check out Balrogath on your favourite streaming service, listen to local bands, and practice
with a metronome.
